I'm restoring a cedar deck that has alot of nail holes in the top hand rail board. The holes hold water and it makes the rail look bad. I'm looking for some type of exterior wood filler or putty that is stainable to fill the holes. I know alot of the fillers I've looked at say stainable but  they really aren't. I've tried mixing the limited precolored fillers available but can't come anywhere close on a color to match the cedar with the brown sugar stain. I'm sure one of the Contractor Pro's  have a solution for my problem, theres got to be a truely stainable filler or some way to come close to the color to fill the holes. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

Ugh - hate it when someone gets to heavy with the hammer!  We've never found a good filler that stains, rather, elect to "plug" the holes with wood plugs or dowels and sand flush.  Far more labor intensive and costly but it looks nice if there aren't thousands of holes.  You could try to make your own stuff using sawdust and a stainable wood glue.
